題名の通り、正直驚いています。

　以前3年間勤務していた監査法人は、業界では最大手のひとつということもあり、海外に子会社をもつ会社も多いことから、現地監査人や現地スタッフと英語でやり取りをする機会が多少ありました。

　監査法人を退職した後半年強海外へ語学留学をしていたのですが、帰国後は中小企業のお客様に密着できる規模の会計事務所ないし税理士法人で、税務を中心とした業務に携わりたいと考えていた私にとって、おそらく英語を身につけたところで仕事で使う機会は無いだろうと思っていました。

　しかし、当法人に所属して間もなく、英語を母国語とする海外のお客様で、新規に会社設立をしてレストランをオープンさせたいという案件を任されることになりました。名古屋で英語が使える会計事務所をインターネットで探し、当法人の英語サイトを見て連絡をして頂いたそうです。

　ある程度日本語を理解される方ではありますが、会話、メールは基本的に全て英語です。私も海外留学を経て、日常会話レベルの英語は理解できるようになったつもりでしたが、会計や税務で使う特殊な英語、例えば源泉徴収、納付書、減価償却･･･等、全く馴染みの無いものを使う必要があったことから、一つ一つ調べ、試行錯誤の時期が続いていました。

　そのような状況の中、先日、無事法人の確定申告を終えることができ、その決算報告も兼ねてお客様の経営する店舗へと、所長の石田と共に夕食を取りに足を運びました。閑静な住宅街の中に突然現れる、異国情緒に溢れ非常に雰囲気がいいお店で、明るいオーナーと英会話も楽しむことができます。おいしい食事も頂けたのですが、これから安定したお客様を確保していくために、日本人の目線からお店をどう感じるか、どうすればより良くなるのかといった提案等、仕事の話もさせて頂け、経営者の方にも興味を持って聞いて頂けました。お店の今後が非常に楽しみです。
　思いもしていなかった英語での仕事の一区切りを終え、達成感を得ることができた共に、今後英語での仕事を増やしていける一つのきっかけになったと思い、大変嬉しく思っています。

Recently, I have been able to use my English skills in the accounting office.
I used to belong to one of the biggest Audit firms in the world, and sometimes I used English to communicate with foreign auditors.
After working there for 3 years, I moved to the UK and Europe, and studied English for 8 months. At the time, I thought I wouldn’t actually have a chance to use English in the future back in Japan. I wanted to work with small and medium sized companies, which often don’t have foreign clients or the need for English speakers.
Nevertheless, after only one month with Ishida Accounting, I took charge of a new client account. The company is owned by a foreigner living in Japan originally from Canada.
His plan was to open a new style western restaurant in Nagoya. He wanted to find an accounting firm that could deal with small businesses, but also provide the kind of international services that big accounting companies offer, to cope with doing business in a new country.
He found our company online, and he was very happy to be able to communicate with me in English. He knows Japanese as well, but is more comfortable in English – especially for complex business matters.
I was also able to improve my English Accounting vocabulary, I had to look up many new words I had not learned during my studies. It has been difficult, but fulfilling.
The first fiscal year recently finished, and we completed the financial statements. We also offered some tips to the business owner from a Japanese perspective, which he found very helpful and valuable.
We had a great time when visiting his place of business as well. The restaurant is in a ‘hideaway’ location on the second floor of a building in Izumi area of Higashi-ku. It is not very far from Sakae. The owner and chef are both native English speakers, and they are happy to talk to customers in English and Japanese. There is also a full-time Japanese manager. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
I have opened a new chapter in my career, and it has been a great business experience, helping people from abroad bring business to Japan.
